Walmart offering the iPhone 5 on its Straight Talk Unlimited plan

img_2404

A few months ago, users started figuring out how to get their iPhones to work on TracFone’s Straight Talk network, exclusive to Walmart. From solely a price standpoint, the Straight Talk with an iPhone makes a lot of sense — 9to5Mac reports that it can save users an average of nearly a grand, just due to the lower prices that the plan carries. The company recently announced that they’d be offering the iPhone. Read on for the details.

Change your iPhone 5 carrier logo without a jailbreak

photo

A few days ago, we saw a couple of developers show us a rather complex way to change the carrier logo to something far more interesting than AT&T or Verizon’s default text strings. I’m a lazy dude, so I didn’t even attempt it, partially because I was somewhere up the East Coast, attempting to imbibe copious quantities of alcohol without my peers thinking I was an alcoholic. When I got home, I learn that one of my friends wrote a Mac application that simplifies the entire process. Read on.

Fry’s takes Walmarts iPhone 5 price and subtracts a dollar

Frys-iPhone-5-holiday-2012

It appears as if it’s that holiday season where every company has to take part in a reverse bidding war to sell the iPhone 5. The lower their price is, the more potential customers they have. Last week, w reported that Walmart had the best deal at $127 for a new iPhone 5, on contract. However, if you have a Fry’s electronic warehouse nearby, they seem to have the iPhone 5 for an entire dollar less than Walmart does. Keep in mind, I wouldn’t drive across country to save that single dollar, but if you have one closer, who knows, maybe that dollar can get you an entire meal at McDonalds. The hospital bill for food poisoning might set you back, though. Fry’s web store is below the break.

Walmart cuts the price on the iPhone 5, drastically

iphone5

Throughout the holiday season, retailers have been continually dropping the price on Apple products. It’s like a war – who can possibly sell the device for the lowest price while continuing to make a significant profit. As of earlier today, Walmart seems to take the cake, dropping the price of a new, 16GB iPhone 5 to $127, light-years cheaper than other retailers. Popular electronic stores like Radioshack have been cutting the price in $20 dollar incriminates, making the trade-n program for iPhones particularly appealing. However, Walmart’s price is really amazing.

If you were looking for a time to upgrade your iPhone, this may be the very best deal you’ll be able to get all year. Really. Until the iPhone 5S drops, $130 for the best/newest iPhone is something even I would consider doing, even though my baby-hands are not capable of reaching the entire screen comfortably.

Legendary Twitter app, Twitterific 5, gets released

Back in the day, Twitterific was one of the first Twitter clients for iOS. It wasn’t even available through the AppStore, at first, as it didn’t exist. You had to essentially jailbreak your iPhone. As time went on, Twitterific became one of the best Twitter apps, updating constantly and staying somewhat relevant. However, last year, they released Twitterific 4 and haven’t released an update since. Last night, though, Twitterific 5 got released. It’s awesome.

Alleged iPhone 5S backplate surfaces

To the disapproval of many, Apple has entered the cycle of adding the letter “S” on the end of the currently released iPhone and slightly improving the internals. Even though the iPhone 5 has just been released, it’s the time of the year where Apple has to be prepared to release its replacement. We happened to get our hands on the backplate of a phone that looks nearly identical to the current device, minus the placement of the screws.

Apple starts selling unlocked iPhone 5s

For the past few months, many of us have taken on some significant part-time money by selling iPhone unlocks, allowing you to use your new iPhone 5 on nearly every major carrier worldwide. More and more people started offering the ability to unlock phones and the market got significantly more polluted. In not much time at all, Apple decided to take advantage of the market, as they’ve done with most of the other versions of the iPhone.

The unlocked version of the iPhone 5 costs significantly more than the carrier version, on contract. If you need an unlocked iPhone and you already have one locked to a carrier, i recommend heading over to the unlocks section of this site and purchasing one of those. Not to discredit Apple, but we do know what we’re doing when it comes to unlocks.

iPhone 5 shipping times drop to 1 week for the holidays

In some countries, as a precursor to the seasonal holidays, the dreaded multi-week shipping time has dropped to a mere week. We imagine that this is to ensure deliverability before Christmas and New Years, but it’s also possible that the demand has gone down or the supply has gone up, allowing Apple to have phones in a warehouse to ship out when a new order came in. Previously, the phones were being made as they were being bought, causing Apple to slowly fall behind orders.

Even though the shipping has only dropped in New Zealand, Singapore, and Australia, more should be dropping any day now.

AT&T offering refurbished iPhone 5s for $99

9to5Mac points out that AT&T is the first carrier to offer refurbished iPhone 5s. Of course, there hasn’t been a large amount of time for Apple to refurbish the phones, but nevertheless, AT&T is now offering refurbished iPhone 5 models for half the price of a new iPhone 5. If you’re not opening a new line or upgrading at the end of two years, this translates to a rough $100 off the purchase price of a phone that is as new you need, given the phone is basically 60% new, including the cosmetic aspects.

For those of you, like me, who don’t believe that the upgrade is worth half a grand, this could certainly help. However, it still doesn’t feel that great. Hopefully, soon, AT&T will begin to allow iPh0ne users to cheat on their upgrades like they did in the past. See, when I was your age, AT&T would allow users to get the full upgrade price whenever a new iPhone came out. Well, this is how it worked for me on my family plan.
